You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We received our sweet Bella back yesterday. The love and care is truly shown. Her cute paw print, nose print and lock of hair are perfect. Her urn is beautiful as well. We are happy to have her home again and you have made it very special. Our love for her and being apart of our family for 16 years is beautifully displayed. Thank you.”

“Due to an unforeseeable tragedy of a life ended too soon we found ourselves in crisis. The staff at "Fond Memories," notably Katie and Jay, helped shut everything down until our loved one was secured and properly cared for. They went above and beyond giving us comfort and compassion in a time of so much pain and termiol... We can not thank them enough and will NEVER forget thier kindness and understanding! Such Special Texas Sized Hearts that have FOREVER earned our patronage!”

“They have cremated both of my babies and returned them quickly. Very respectful. The urns that both of my babies came back in were more what we call "poverty urns" for income-sensitive people, though, and I paid $25 for a nose print to display and it wasn't display-worthy. (It wasn't even his full nose.) Luckily, our vet took digital paw print and nose/mouth images and we can use that in the shadow box, instead. The urns, luckily, were "free" and included with the package, so we can just discard them. I'd be embarrassed to have this in my house... It's not even stained all over! In summary, recommend for cremation services, but not for display-worthy memorial pieces.”
