You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I do not recommend using this funeral home at all! I used Akins for my mother who recently passed away. Their communication skills are absolutely terrible and the entire experience was unpleasant. Every time they answered the phone, if at all, it was as if you were bothering them. When you ask them questions they act as if you should already know the answer. I called to ask what all I needed to bring in order to have my mom ready and I brought exactly what they told me to. They told me the day before the viewing that I needed to bring a hair piece for her and due to me working full time I was not able to drive 45 mins to bring one at the last minute. As an alternative I sent a picture of a different hairstyle and received no response. When I viewed my mother’s body it was as if they didn’t even try to make her look like herself. I was heartbroken. Unfortunately due to the circumstances I decided not to make a big deal about it. I then called 2 weeks later to check the status of her cremation and death certificates and as always they responded as if I should have already known and as if I was a bother for asking a simple question. It took over 2 months to receive my mother’s ashes. It took 4 months to get her death certificates and when I called about it, they had no clue what I was talking about. I understand things take time but communication would have been nice. It’s really unfortunate the lack of compassion this place has. This was a really challenging and difficult experience obviously due to the huge loss but this Funeral Home did not make this experience any less stressful. I was a 22 year old who never had to plan a funeral before but I know for sure if I ever have to do this again I will not be going with Akins. I really put my trust in this place seeing that both my grandparent’s funeral was through Akins but I was VERY disappointed. They took advantage of the fact that I was young and in a vulnerable place emotionally. My only regret is not going with a more professional and compassionate funeral home. This experience has been horrible and traumatic. I am truly disgusted.”

“If I could leave negative stars I very well would've! Mr. Akins is very cold and gives off a kind of callousness..that no one should have to endure in such a vulnerable time their lives. I lost my mom and this was my first experience with dealing with being responsible for this type of arrangement. He was not sympathetic at all & and didn't provide much guidance during this process. So if you want a better experience during this difficult time in your life. I'd recommend going to another funeral home for your needs.”
