You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“If you enjoy playing endless phone tag trying to get the simplest information on cremation services during your most painful time, then by all means call “Chapel of Memories” and let the games begin. My “Memories” of my interaction with them include speaking with no less than four different individuals-all of whom stated they couldn’t help me with even the simplest pricing and services question. All said, “talk to Elizabeth.” While she did finally leave a message it was to tell me she was leaving the office in five minutes but “call anytime on our 24/7 line and anyone who answers can help you.” Lie. Yes, a live answering service answered my call this morning, but only to tell me they’d leave a message for Elizabeth. I called an hour later, this time a male voice answered-also couldn’t provide basic answers and said he’d “leave a message for Elizabeth.” What exactly do you pay these people to do Elizabeth? It sure as heck isn’t responding to potential customers during a family crisis. Fortunately, found a wonderful funeral home who gave me immediate, straightforward answers with compassion. It wasn’t “Chapel of Memories.””

“The last thing I thought I would ever be doing is planning a funeral for my daughter. After her sudden and unexpected death we reached out to Chapel of Memories. They were very supportive and empathetic and made an extremely difficult situation easier for our family during our immense grief. The Chapel is beautiful and the service honored my daughter. Everyone I was in contact with was very professional and compassionate. Every detail was handled without my family having to worry that something might be missed. Chapel of Memories helped make the most terrifible time in my life as smooth as possible.”
