You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Communication is VERY poor. I was never contacted about retrieving my mother's ashes,i called but noone has ever called me back, but 3 weeks after i called, i received a voicemail from the funeral director. i returned his call and asked for the person who he told me to ask for. that person only took names and phones numbers of the people i wanted to to pick up her remains. today my family member called to inform them she was on the way but was told she couldn't pick them up because she's not on the list. I immediately call and explain the situation Leah was nice and helpful but this is still inconvenient. This could have been avoid if THE COMMUNICATION was there. I should've been informed there is an additional form to be filed out /initialing when i returned the call instead of names and phones numbers being taken. why wasn't i called once the ashes were returned to the funeral home? why no one ever returned my call? This is frustrating and completely unnecessary i'd also like to add once my mom's body was received from Detroit I was NEVER called. she sat there for 2 days. i was allowing the24hr to 48 hr most companies give as a courtesy for contact...i CALLED them. my friend sent a lantern from dignity but i never received it. she called to see where it was(almost a week after delivery) i was then called and informed they would ship it since i live out of state. UPDATE 1/13-i was told i needed to sign the paperwork and every thing was good to go. NOPE NOT TRUE!! i talked with Phil today and he let me know what I needed. i just don't understand why I'm being told one thing and when i follow up it's something else. This is an ongoing MESS!!! ATP this is a paycheck for them. i guess since everything was paid in full...it doesn't matter..they have their money. a family member recommended DO McComb & sons- i hate i took their advice.”
