You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“New's funeral home did a wonderful job with my Grandfather's funeral. They take pride in their job and make sure all needs are taken care of during your time of grief.”

“Our family trusted New's Monticello Funeral Home to care for our grandmother and help us through one of the hardest days of our lives, and unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing and upsetting. First, the obituary they prepared contained multiple misspelled names and read as if it had not been proofread at all. There were numerous run-on sentences and basic grammatical errors, which made an already emotional moment feel careless and unprofessional. Second, a staff member named Donna behaved in ways that we found extremely inappropriate and distressing. After the funeral, while I was still sitting with my grieving grandfather and saying goodbye to my grandmother, Donna physically pushed me out of my seat when I was not ready to leave the room. Throughout the service and the time our family spent together grieving, she made inappropriate comments and phone calls nearby. She also spoke disrespectfully about our pallbearers who were running late, saying things like, “I guess they decided not to leave on time,” which felt unnecessary and insensitive. In addition, Donna and my grandfather had agreed on a specific price prior to the funeral services, but she did not uphold that agreement. This added unnecessary stress and confusion to our family during an already overwhelming time. The memorial video they created for our grandmother was also very poorly done. Many of the photos were cut off, and in several images her face was not even visible. This was extremely disappointing, as these details matter deeply to grieving families. Finally, we had specifically requested that our grandmother be buried with her diamond earrings, which was communicated prior to the funeral. We were later told this could not be done because she had already been embalmed, which we have since learned is not accurate. It also took an excessive amount of time for our family to get her diamond earrings returned to us. Overall, our experience felt careless, unprofessional, and at times disrespectful during one of the most vulnerable moments of our lives. I hope this feedback encourages the funeral home to improve their communication, professionalism, and sensitivity toward grieving families so no one else has to go through the awful experience we did. My grandma deserved so much more than this place had to offer.”
