You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We recently used the services of Trout Funeral Home for the funeral service and burial of our mom (and also of our dad in 2017). We were experiencing tremendous grief as we met with their staff, and in both cases, they were patient and kind, offering choices and suggestions when we had no idea what to do, and honoring our final decisions. There are so many things they took care of behind the scenes that allowed us to grieve and be with our friends and loved ones. We highly recommend their services.”

“I would not recommend them to anyone. Orbituary was more of an advertisement for them until we finally got them to change it. At viewing spray we bought for casket was on a stand figured maybe that was because it was open. My mom’s hair had not been touched was told later I could have had her beautician or they had someone that could have done it. Verrry sad the way she looked and not once did I think they wouldn’t even try. Then at graveside spray was behind the casket on stand clumped together with the other flowers. Music that I took them to play was not playing. So my family comes to my mom’s graveside memorial to remember seeing a casket sitting there waiting to be dropped in a hole. Had 8 days to prepare her but blamed everything on having another service that day, cemetery for losing things and florist for their own mistakes. Just hope no one else have to witness these memories of their mom memorial service.”

“The driver in the photo I will add was driving in excess down the road I live on. Once we turned off of oakland and on to Waverly he reached speeds over 80mph CHILDREN LIVE ON THIS ROAD! I was able to catch back up to him on south Avenue and take a photo! For a company that cares for people in a time of loss, driving like this guy is a great way to take a life!”
