You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“What an amazing gift Austin funeral home was in the middle of a crazy chapter, when my mother passed away unexpectedly. We thank the Lord she had already set up her account ahead of time with this wonderful company. The staff and people were nothing but gracious and made it easy when setting it up, to ask questions and actually, we had a few great laughs putting Her account together prior… It seems a little wild to try and think out worst case, best case scenarios, but they filled us in on every detail that could happen and what that would look like mentally and financially if we were and were not prepared. The whole staff on the phone or in person was nothing short of amazing for us. They were kind, they were gentle they knew the facts, they were great listeners and the details went perfect. Part of their services offered are making phone calls to Medicare, your extra insurance, any other state programs. You can even pay ahead of time for obituary space in any newspapers that you want. All we had to do was write the obituary and turn it in and they did all the rest with a photo. They had my mother displayed so beautifully when we came to pick her up in the vessels we had chosen/made for her ashes. It was not just an activity for the day but it made you pause and reflect. How great thou art thank you heavenly father/Lord for making this challenging time so easy in this arena. I give my mom Big kudos for being brave enough to go in ahead of time ask the hard questions set up the account and hand it off so her family had a care free experience after she passed. Thank you, mom you’re my hero in so many ways…. Wendy Lee and her whole family are extremely grateful to Austin funeral home. Thank you.”

“My dad passed away unexpectedly on Dec 23rd. He had a prepaid plan with Austin Funeral Home for cremation which only paid for a cardboard box to cremate him in, the cheapest plastic box for his remains, the transportation to the funeral home, and the cremation itself. My sisters and I wanted to run obituaries in 2 of the local papers. While the funeral home offered to help post them, we were able to complete it ourselves. My trip to handle my dad's affairs and funeral was a very hasty one and we were not able to complete any funeral arrangements in the time I had as we were still waiting for the coroner to sign off for the cremation. And while we were trying to decide how to deal with my dad's remains, Lance was very helpful after we had decided to disperse his remains in the place he grew up. We did upgrade the container from the plastic one my dad paid for to a biodegradable one that we will use to disperse his remains. We didn't know this was an option and Lance was very helpful in advising us while we were deciding how to go about this. Unfortunately, the location was inaccessible at the time, and I couldn't extend my trip, so the funeral home is very kindly holding his (cremated) remains in a safe place for us at no extra charge until our family can gather this summer for a service. Lance was very nice to work with, and considerate of the additional financial expenses incurred for unexpected travel during the holidays. He didn't try to play on our grief to sell additional services and I would highly recommend him and Austin Funeral Home.”
