You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I would like to think Thompson's Funeral Home and theit staff for the excellent job that was done for my Mom Memorial celebration. They did everything right! The compassion and professionalism that was shown, during such a ruff time for are family, we could never express enough. My Mom was a Sacramento resident for over 75 years. She and I moved out of state. Within 3 months of our move, she passed away. I called Thompson's and spoke to Ms. Pat. She avised me of the steps I needed to take to get my Mom's remains back to Sacramento. Once my Mom arrived, they took charge. We just followed their lead. Ms. Pat, who has worked for Thompson's for almost 40 years, was fantastic! It was evident that she knew what she was doing! My family was so pleased with the way they were treated by Ms. Pat and the rest of the staff during such a trying time. We are so thankful that my mom chose Thompson's. Apparently, she knew what she was doing. With graitude and love, thank you, Thompson's Funeral Home, Ms. Pat, and staff for a job well done...”

“0 Stars if I could. I recently contacted Thompson Oak Park Mortuary & Cremation Service and unfortunately, my experience speaking with the Funeral Director Patricia Jones was very disappointing. Her tone during our phone conversation came across as unprofessional and unnecessarily rude. As someone reaching out during a sensitive and emotional time, I expected compassion and courtesy, but instead felt dismissed and disrespected. This initial interaction was enough to make me decide not to use their services. While I cannot speak to the quality of the funeral home itself, the way I was treated over the phone left a lasting negative impression. I hope management takes steps to ensure that all staff treat grieving families with the kindness and professionalism they deserve.”

“I used Thompson back in February and from the moment the phone was answered they were excellent. I worked with Ms Pat who was very attentive, answered all my questions and was so compassionate and caring. Their entire staff was so caring. I met the gentleman who cares for the bodies (embalming, dressing, make up etc.) and you can tell he puts his all into his work and that he is passionate about what he does. I highly recommend Thompson.”
