You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Essentially we paid thousands of dollars to rent out a space. There was no real organization or assistance given. I had to run around the day of the memorial service trying to put the pieces together. Initially the service was supposed to be at Unity a couple of days before Duval request for it to be moved to the church across the street. When we got there the TV that he told me would be available for the slide show was not there. My sister ended up having to run to staples to get cord to be able to connect to the TV because they did not have one. I had to run back and forth across the street to resolve issues because no one came over to assist. When I went to pick up my father’s urn there was ashes at the bottom of the box and at the bottom of the urn. The people who worked at the church acted like they were doing us a favor and maybe it was a favor due to Unity moving it over there at the last minute but that had nothing to do with us. Nothing was handled with care. Overall it was a stressful and exhausting situation.”

“I’m not sure where to begin. The entire staff was incredibly supportive and patient, especially since it was my first time planning a funeral for a loved one. Kay truly stood out and made this experience immensely better for me. Joy and Rachel were very respectful, and everyone else was wonderful, even if I didn’t catch all their names. My loved one looked beautiful, making the experience genuinely comforting. The chapel service created a warm atmosphere for my family and friends, with an excellent pastor and organist. I also appreciated the smooth experience leading up to the cemetery and during the service there, with my director providing personal support throughout. Sorry I didnt remember all names but ALL of you and I mean ALL of you were the best, Thank You.”

“I had services rendered from this business and let me say this...I don't like dishonest people. 1st I asked to remove transportation services from my bill because I out sourced my own service. I notified them in advance. Low and behold the day of the service they still sent them old a$$ Limo's. I IMMEDIATELY called the person I was dealing with and he apologized and said don't worry about it. Now I am dealing with the insurance company only to find out that they sent a bill which included transportation services which I did not utilize. I reached out and asked them to send a corrected bill and even went down there and signed new paperwork, they still sent the same bill for the higher amount. Bottom line CHECK YOUR PAPERWORK PEOPLE THIS AIN'T THEIR 1ST TIME DOING THIS!!!!!!!!!!!”
