You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Matthew is a super respectful transporter who provides the most gentle and respectful care, while still being a real, down-to-earth person. Thank you Minnich Funeral Home for all of your help and support.”

“Scott and his family have always treated our family the best through difficult times. Unfortunately, we're here again with a fantastic brother in law who passed. Scott went to school with our sons. Additionally they have 1 of only 2 cremation facilities in this area. Very convenient. I remember when that was all done in Baltimore. Without the additional transportation costs, Minnich was the best choice.”

“My husband and I shopped for pre-need for his parents in both Hagerstown and Frederick several years prior to requiring funeral home services in 2021. This was our first experience going to funeral homes for pre-need. It has been 2.5 years since the funeral and this review has been on my to-do list since then, but the exceptional service we received from Minnich is fresh on my mind as I write this review. You can never forget how someone made everything run so smoothly during times of grief. My husband and I went to three funeral homes in early 2019 during our search for pre-need arrangements, two in the Hagerstown/Boonsboro area and one in Frederick. Of the three, Minnich Funeral Home impressed us the most for several reasons. Christine (at Minnich) was an absolute professional when she provided us all the information we requested, but more than that, she provided us information we didn't know we needed when looking into pre-need. Minnich was the third place we went, and we learned things about pre-need that none of the others took the time to explain and I'm sure would have been "surprises" later on. We got an education us about all the things that go into purchasing pre-need arrangements. We felt fully informed when we left Minnich and she and Scott answered all our questions during follow-up calls. She gave us no-nonsense quotes that we felt were not only "fair" but were much more reasonable & competitive than the two other funeral homes we visited. And it never felt like a sales job. The original quote was the price, the only price all the way to the end, no nonsense last minutes adjustments. Minnich did everything for us and there were no surprises. If all that hadn't sold us, it would have been how easy they made it to accomplish everything we needed, including Minnich setting up the interest bearing accounts, doing the remembrance brochure, the flower arrangements for the casket and leading us to a awesome place for a memorial headstone. They even asked us what kind and color of flowers were wanted for each pre-need and we gave instructions of the type of flowers and colors Mom and Dad both liked. When the time came, they were so beautiful and abundant, and less expensive than the other funeral homes! The service was conducted seamlessly at the Funeral Home and by the grave-side. Scott was so gracious after we made several last minute changes to the video. He was wonderful, compassionate. Just the sweetest and kindest man. Thank you Scott, for providing us with the kind of service for pre-need as well as the service during the difficult times we all experience at the end of life of a loved one. I highly recommend Minnich Funeral Home!”
