You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My used Baker for my Mom and was very pleased - things went well and so easy for me and the lady there was so sweet and caring. I have a few funny memories that make me laugh - but that is how I take care of stress. So when husband died I went to Baker again in Valley Center - a few problems - but they had so many deaths right then. I like the way they react to me and family - answered all questions and never pushed. They did what we wanted - I am very pleased with them. Those of you that had negative remarks - I know this is an awful time - but you have so much to do - don't take it out on Baker. Yes - sometimes it was hard to get ahold of them - but I took that with a grain of salt. Try getting everything done right away - that is stress.”

“If I could leave negative stars I would. This place is a joke and absolutely ridiculous. The heartache and turmoil these people have put my family through, my papa passed away on Thursday, my family called and called and called and the director Genie wouldn’t return our calls their answering service people are rude as hell. When genie finally called she told my family that she’s busy with other clients and it would take them over a month to take care of my papa to have his body cremated and to get it back to our family, the staff there terrible. We had a family friend go pick up my papas body to take to a different place to have his wishes met. That way my poor nana and our family doesn’t have to sit around waiting for those people to call or to take care of our papa. Don’t recommend or encourage or support this funeral home thy don’t care about your family they just care about their money”

“I wish I could leave a negative star. Baker's funeral home in Valley Center is so disrespectful and rude. Had to deal with them when my mother in law passed away. Our first visit there was nothing that I would of expected it to be. The lady helping talked more about her life and what she was doing for a person she is DPOA for. We were there for 2 hours to sign a piece of paper and listen to this lady talk about her life. She was not sympathetic towards my husband or sister in law. Very unprofessional. They do not return phone calls at all!!! My husband decided to stop by there to pick up his mothers ashes and come to find out she had been ready since the 14th but no phone call or email to inform the family that ashes were ready to be picked up. While my husband was in there picking up his mothers ashes the lady working there wouldn't even get off the phone just kept talking as she handed my husband the ashes and muttered something about death certificates. So very very rude and unprofessional. I would not recommend this place to anyone!!!!!!”
