You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Jerry Spears funeral home has been our go to funeral home on the Westside for many years . We were born and raised on the Westside although we all don’t still reside there now , it’s been our go to for a lot of our family & several friends funerals over several yrs. The main reason why is because of how wonderful & caring people they are! They’re awesome when it comes to communicating and is always there to help answer any questions you have and will do whatever they can do to try to make it a better experience for you and your family. I can’t express enough of how pleasant & easy they make such a very difficult time so much easier for you to deal with and to go through. I have so many different & great experiences through the yrs of their act of kindness & thoughtful things that Steve, Bob , Jennifer & Keith (he’s a newer addition to their staff.) have done and I can honestly say they make you feel like your family and what you want matters, which speaks a lot! They have done several things that may be small to them but, huge to us which it shows through their respect and kindness of what they do and I want to let others know because, it doesn’t go unnoticed and we appreciate it and them so much for always making such a difficult time better for everyone!”

“Losing a parent isn’t something you “move on” from. Grief isn’t linear. It doesn’t stick to a timeline. One moment you’re holding it together, the next you’re breathless from a memory, a sound, or like today a piece of mail. Today I received a letter from Jerry Spears Funeral Home. Not a note of condolence. Not a message of care. But a sales pitch. Months after my parent passed, after the dust has barely settled, they dug into their files, pulled my family’s grief back out, and used it to try and sell us more services. No heads-up. No compassion. Just a cold, calculated attempt to turn our loss into profit. Funeral homes already carry a reputation for exploiting families when they’re most vulnerable, but this? This confirms it. To the people at Jerry Spears Funeral Home: Your letter is a gut punch. A reminder of pain we didn’t ask to feel again today. You’re not offering support. You’re reopening wounds for a dollar. Your business model is shameful. And I sincerely hope your community sees this for what it is, a disgusting and predatory practice. Grief doesn’t need marketing. It needs compassion. And what you did is the opposite of that.”

“I wanted to thank Jennifer at Jerry Spears Funeral home and the staff. You were very professional and helpful through the whole process. The hardest time of my life and you helped me all the way through it and that meant a lot to me in my time of need. You don't realize how much goes into a funeral and Jennifer broke it down for me and helped me know what I needed and her assistance through the whole process was great and greatly appreciated. I just want to thank Jennifer and each one of the staff members for their assistance. I would highly recommend Jerry Spears to anyone looking for a good funeral home on West Broad St. They had plenty of parking and let me decorate the place and we had food and they worked with us with the music. They have really nice areas you can set up for people to meet and eat at. It was a nice open event and it had a welcoming environment. Thanks again for a wonderful experience in a hard time and moment in life. Great job. Kudos!”
