You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I experienced my first loss of a loved one very recently. Myself & my brother had went to Burton prior to make the arrangements. We were provided everything we needed to know at that first initial meeting. Everyone was extremely friendly, kind, and considerate. After my father passed away, Burton did an amazing job at meeting with us to get things scheduled. We were all wowed in amazement at how wonderful Burton did with my dad’s viewing. He looked amazing. You would never know he was so sick before passing. The flower set up was beautiful. There were ribbons on the flowers that were made to match perfectly with the suit that my dad wore. It was just truly beautiful. We never had to make arrangements or do anything like this before and Burton really stepped up and went above and beyond for us. I am so pleased with how well they took care of my father & his services. They had a bag ready for us after the viewing as well which contained laminated obituaries for myself and my family, 2 DVD’s of the slideshow we played during the viewing, thank you cards, etc. It was just amazing. I thank Burton for making this experience easy for us and giving us so make grace and patience.”

“My father before passing asked me his son to do arrangements of flowers that he liked and have an announcement that the Anna shelter was to be given donations in lieu of flowers. In burtons obituary there were no less than three large ads to buy flowers for the funeral through them. Very deceptive. Then the director at the viewing told my grieving crying sister that she would have to cart the arrangements that were not bought through them to her house and she could take them graveside and the funeral home would take the ones bought through they’re site to the graveside. OUTRAGEOUS. And we had to pay for an ad for Burton to sell flowers against our will!”

“It has been almost 40 years of having many dogs that were part of my life. Each one always had a special place in my heart. Upon their passing I had them cremated by Burton Pet Loss Center (Located at Ericson Memorial Studios, 3803 W Ridge Rd). Over all the years, all the staff of Burton Funeral Home have been wonderful in the way they handled every one of my dogs. They truly understand the loss of a pet is like losing a family member. No matter what time of the day they passed on, Peter Burton (himself) and his staff have always been available for me. Since I had so many dogs, and limited number of urns, I began customizing my own with the ones that were available. Sherri Lawrence at Ericson has been FANTASTIC in assisting me with this. Gave her an idea and she turned it into something beautiful. She is truly talented and a wonderful person. Every employee I have had contact with over the years have been great at their job and gave wonderful service during a time of grief. I do have to also mention that several years ago Peter Burton handled the funeral arrangements for my mother that passed away. There was not a lot financially for the funeral and cremation, but Peter worked with me to make it something beautiful, all the way to making a new head stone for the cemetery that was out of town for my mother and father. Peter handled everything and there was nothing missed. His compassion and understanding was anchor to hang on to during my time of grief. I will be entrusting my final arrangements with Peter Burton and his staff. Thank You to Peter Burton and the entire staff for many years of service you have given me.”
