You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.
If your loved one had a life insurance policy, the benefit can cover these costs — and we'll file the claim and handle the carrier for you, even without the policy number. $0 upfront, and nothing if it doesn't pay out.
“Really profoundly disorganized and convoluted processes. I needed simple death certificates mailed to me for my husband, but they made the process incredibly complicated. They said they needed his mother to email them permission for me to order them and when she did they didn't get it because their email system "doesn't work with comcast email addresses." I've never heard of such a thing. Then when they finally got the email with her drivers license attached they still called and bothered the poor woman to verify. In the end it took 5 phone calls and three emails to make the order. That was a week and a half ago and I still haven't received them!!”

“H-B Bayside is a WRECK compared to H-B Great Neck and H-B Kempsville. Uneven pics on wall, broken ledger stand, and men's restroom had a rusty sink and grinding ceiling fan. We requested water from a chapel associate, waited 45 mins, then asked the Director. He put out FIVE half-bottles, but we asked again and again and finally got enough water after half the guests had left the chapel. Unless you despise your dearly departed, go to ANY OTHER Hollomon-Brown for first rate accommodations”

“I see that some people may have had a good experience at other locations, but do NOT use this location. It was the worst experience. The employees was rude, uncaring, insensitive and seemed to be completely disconnected from their job working with families of the deceased. We felt like we were sitting in front of a used car salesman. It was an awful experience, especially after losing our mother.”
