You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Joe Paul Jr., Heather and Jay for their amazing support when my mother passed away. We were treated with immense compassion and care during the entire process. Heather and Jay attended to every specific detail perfectly including drafting the obituary, the private viewing, the beautiful memorial video, and printing extra thank you notes for us. The entire team at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service was caring, detailed oriented, and went above and beyond to make our mother's services special. They truly treated us like family and we are forever grateful.”

“On August 2nd, 2025, my dad passed away. Only a few short months later, my mother passed away on November 26th, 2025. Both of my parents had wanted there services managed by Joseph B. Paul Jr., that is a request they made many years ago. Joe Paul and his staff treated me and my family much like we were a part of their family. They were all very comforting, helpful, and professional throughout every stage of the process. The facility was also extremely nice, 10/10. The Visitation, Memorial, and Reception services conducted by the staff were done with exceptional attention to detail and professionalism. My thanks goes out each and every member of that staff. I wish I could name each and every person I interacted with, but unfortunately I can only remember the names those I had interacted with the most, which was: Joe, Janet, Heather, Carla, and Jay. It's great people like you that make life's most difficult times a little easier.”

“I'm 69 years old. I was so lost at the loss of my wife of 48 years Joseph Paul and his entire staff came to my aid when my bank was robbed of $9,000. They spent untold man hours above and beyond and helped me apply for the loan to lay my love to rest. They even showed me how to set up email. In 2018 they laid my son to rest and seven years later they laid the Bride of my youth to rest and they held my hand all the way through from beginning to the burial and beyond calling and checking on me making sure I was okay knowing I was alone and had no one, they are truly like family their love and kindness are not just words or selling tactics -they are real old fashioned 100% eastern North Carolina that I fell in love with in 1980. I had no idea how to do anything -I was messing it up and they helped me get the burial plot. They also help me with the flower arrangements and everything to make my wife's funeral beautiful. When I say I was a mess I was lost beyond measure my heart says thank you Joe and Josh and the rest of the staff. A month later Joe Paul still checks on me. I truly love them and their staff. Every body there went above and beyond the normal funeral process. They all held my hand, every staff member spent many many hours individually helping me with email setup that I never had before and the processing of the loan after my bank account was robbed. Filing for life insurance was one of the most complicated forms I've ever filled out but no matter how distraught I was each staff member there was very patient and showed me nothing but love and understanding -to both me and our family and friends before, during and after the service. It was phenomenal, and for that I will be eternally grateful. It’s as if they were angels sent by God. I do not possess the vocabulary to articulate my feelings or thoughts on the matter, but I am forever thankful nonetheless.”
