You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I am writing to express my profound disappointment and distress regarding the burial service for my uncle, Dr. Billy R Odems which was scheduled for Saturday, November 29th, 2025. Our family arrived at the burial site as planned, only to discover that the grave had not been prepared. This meant we were unable to proceed with laying him to rest, a deeply upsetting and frankly traumatic experience for everyone present. The confusion and disappointment felt by our family are beyond words. I personally drove ten hours to attend this significant event and am now unable to extend my stay to await the resolution of this issue by Cook Walden. The inability to properly inter my uncle on the scheduled day, after traveling so far, has added immensely to our grief. This situation is utterly unacceptable, and it is heartbreaking that such a critical and sensitive moment was so mishandled. One has only one opportunity to properly honor a loved one in this way, and that opportunity was unfortunately ruined.”

“Doesn't seem like they put much effort into upkeep. One grave was completely sunken in on one end and needs to be filled. I saw a bunch of random debris set on top of people's headstones (pipes, a lost temporary marker) and many markers were askew, partially grown over, or their screw-in vases were knocked over.”

“I am beyond unhappy with the work of this company’s staff. I live 1500 miles away, so I had to make arrangements for my mother’s burial by email and phone. We were not having a burial service, but we planned to make a trip to view the gravesite once everything was taken care of. We were having my mother’s cremains buried next to my father’s grave in the plot that was purchased long ago, so I had no choice of cemeteries. I worked with someone on the grave marker via phone and email. I paid promptly for burial and grave marker. When I checked back a few months later to see if everything was done, she wouldn’t answer my emails. I placed a call and ended up speaking to someone else altogether who told me the original person DOESN’T ANSWER HER EMAILS! (She did in the beginning of this process.) I learned that the grave marker had not even been ordered yet, and my mother’s cremains had not been buried. This was 4 months after I paid them to take care of all this! I wish I didn’t have to work with these people and this company, but I was stuck with them. I noticed that Location Manager Isabel Espinosa responds to negative reviews, so I contacted her. She didn’t respond to my email, and she wouldn’t take or return my call. I finally got her attention, and the staff stepped up and completed all tasks. They did contact me to let me know when the grave marker had been installed (6 months after initial order). Shameful and inexcusable.”
