You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“While making arrangements for my grandmother, my family and I found Andrew's communication to be hurried and lacking in detail regarding service pricing. This left us feeling pressured, and his apparent lack of empathy was concerning. The email correspondence with him was often unclear, with some of our specific questions going unanswered. When we reviewed the proof for the folders, we noticed misalignment's in the names of the pallbearers and a name that had been duplicated. Despite requesting corrections before printing, these issues were not addressed. Upon arriving to prepare our loved one, we discovered a piece of her jewelry was missing. My inquiry to Andrew about its whereabouts went unanswered. On the day of the service, a more pleasant staff member took charge, and we never heard from Andrew again. When I inquired about the missing bracelet, the response was vague, simply stating, "It's on her now." The overall lack of communication and the sense of urgency suggested a commission-driven approach, which left us feeling unsettled during a difficult time.”

“Our experience was great from start to finish-When we picked up our loved ones ashes-it was obvious they read the obituary and they tailored the room to his love of Automotive-it was such a special touch and very much appreciated. Thanks to you all”

“We had a wonderful experience with Howell Edwards Doerksen from start to finish with regards to my sister’s final arrangements. Elizabeth didn’t leave any details out, carefully and patiently explaining the entire process and helping me make decisions based on our personal needs. She assisted with every aspect and followed up with phone calls regularly. We were treated like family members and are grateful for the caring and compassionate service they provide in time of need. Sondra was also instrumental in the process and made my final visit to sign for and pick up my sister’s cremains and personal items a comfortable and special time. God bless you for what you do!”
