You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Funeral Director Annie and the Miller family provided very good service for my family and me after my father passed away. She coordinated three services and events, and was very accommodating to my sister and my's many, many (sometimes last second) requests. She fully met our needs. The services were beautiful, a great tribute to my father's life and legacy. Annie is an excellent, highly professional, detail oriented Funeral Director. The best, in fact. That being said, I did have a negative experience with another funeral arranger at Miller. Annie and others at Miller had set my expectations in one way, and when I stopped by Miller one day unannounced with a small request, the rando funeral arranger who handled me (I won't name him), denied my request. Then, a couple days later, Annie and another funeral director fulfilled my request when I stopped by a second time (this time making sure if Annie was there first). It was very annoying to waste an extra hour of my valuable time having to travel to Miller twice to have them fulfill my request, a request I very reasonably expected to be fulfilled. One thing I learned while working in a customer facing role at Apple (the masters of customer service, if you've ever been to an Apple Store) was to never break a customer's (or client's) expectations, as the experience is so foul that it leaves a bad taste in the customer's mouth regarding the company. This is how I felt. I will chalk it up to that particular funeral arranger simply having not learned this lesson yet, and the whole thing being a training issue. A training issue that I hope Miller corrects for their own self interest. Nonetheless, the rest of my experience at Miller was so completely excellent that I would give them 4.5 starts if I could, but since I can only leave a whole number of stars, I am rounding up to five.”

“Theresa and the entire team at Miller were phenomenal to work with. They took wonderful care of our mother, coordinated all of the details so we didn’t have to worry, and were so supportive and caring (even weeks after the memorial services). We would strongly recommend Miller Funeral Home and their services for you and your loved ones. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you again Miller team.”

“Tim and all the people at Millers were very understanding and compassionate to our needs at our fathers passing. They took care of many things we did not even think about that needed to be addessed. They truly were great to work with at a most difficult time.”
