“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Rachel at Musgrove Family Mortuary provided truly exceptional care. From the very beginning, she was compassionate, professional, and incredibly attentive to every detail. She took the time to listen to our family’s wishes, offered thoughtful guidance when we needed it, and made sure we felt supported throughout the entire process. Her calm, reassuring presence brought us comfort during an incredibly difficult time. She handled each step with sincerity and respect, ensuring everything was organized, meaningful, and personalized to honor our loved one. Rachel went above and beyond to make sure nothing was overlooked, and her communication was always clear, timely, and thoughtful. We are deeply grateful for her dedication and kindness. Rachel is a wonderful representative of Musgrove Family Mortuary, and we wholeheartedly appreciate the care she provided.”

“The cost of dying is not insignificant. I dealt with Musgrove because they have had a long-standing arrangement with Temple Beth Israel. I made arrangements for both my wife and myself earlier this year, having a well-founded feeling it would be needed soon. My wonderful wife Marlene passed away early in September. On top of reeling from the loss, I also got diagnosed with Covid the day after she died, no doubt caught from one of the care givers I had hired. So, I was in pretty bad shape come the day of her funeral. When I arrived, I asked if there was someone who could drive me up to the grave site, and even though there clearly were employees around, the receptionist said no, no one could do that. Which was a complete lie, as, shortly after I managed to walk there, one of the employees drove up in their golf cart. I asked if he could give me a ride back, which he did. Sometime later, I found that one of my wife's closest friends, who was wheelchair bound, was told that wheelchairs could not access the gravesite, which was a complete lie, as someone (who didn't bother to ask) arrived in a wheelchair without any problem at all. I don't like being lied to and I certainly don't like the idea that although they act so serious and so concerned beforehand, after you pay your money, their sincerity and desire to help go right out the window. As a result, I cannot recommend these people to anyone, unless you want to spend a lot of money and don't care how you are treated later, especially in your time of need.”
