You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“***MAJORITY RULES*** As we all know, anytime one finds themselves dealing with a funeral home, they're already probably having a pretty bad day... Usually we look for solace and comfort, and choose a funeral home we think will beat fit our family, friends, and loved ones' needs during the often difficult grieving process. My family had lost 3 immediate family members very tragically in the previous year. We were no stranger to the funeral process, yet none of us were prepared for the devastating blow of losing both my Father, AND Mother so suddenly and violently the same night. Sadly, as my parents left this earth so tragically, a lot of raw emotions, hurt, anger and even blame ran through my siblings and family. During a private viewing held just for the children anf their spouses, some of that hurt and anger boiled over. Several well-dressed "pillars of the community" acted on that anger. They decided some of us shouldn't even enter the building, to grieve the loss of our parents. They attempted to solve that issue. Together they manhandled, assaulted, lifted, and physically carried the two of us out of the private viewing room, down the hall, through the lobby, and out the doors to the parking lot amidst screaming, yelling, and crying. Where were the funeral staff you might ask? Well, they were just 4 feet behind, following the crowd escorting the family members out, and called the police to have the us arrested. **His crime being we quietly and respectfully entered a public funeral home to grieve the tragic loss of our loved ones. When the sheriff's dept came, I expected more trouble. Yet of all the absurd behavior that day, the officers were the calm ones. After speaking with we, the ostracized members and witnesses, they determined wed done no wrong, and had every right to press charges for assault We declined. Obviously one can't hold Hadley's responsible for this dramatic "Jerry Springer" type of behavior from the Doctorrs, Preachers, Teachers, and city Councilmen of my family. And please understand "embarrassed," doesn't begin to describe this situation, absolutely mortified my family would behave this way, AT a FUNERAL?! Yet I thought it pertinent to my review of Hadley's, directly impacting the service and decisions Im reviewing today. So Again, I don't blame them for the horrendous behavior of my otherwise well behaved, respectable, highly educated family. However .. I will absolutely hold them accountable for their response. I can understand that amidst the chaos and the aftermath, they may have had difficulty untangling the events. So I'm not terribly upset with the funeral director for his initial response, choosing to confront us, and demand we immediately vacate the premises. Once he reviewed the situation; the Director apologized for his misunderstanding quick judgements, and harsh words. My true greivence is with their final decision. We made it clear we would not be pressing charges. We simply inquired as to whether or not we, as immediate family members, would still be permitted to the viewing to say their final goodbyes before the closed casket funerals. They explained it as basic math. My parents had 5 adult children there that day, 4 of them demanded the director not allow us to even say goodbye, and further demanded they be banned from the upcoming open public funeral services. The director explained "Majority Rules". So we lost both my parents violently and tragically, this family member also victim of that tragic evening, whose last visuals of our parents were the things of nightmares and horror films. Yet Hadley's couldn't even be bothered to negotiate, or attempt to offer or arrange a separate private viewing for us. Rather, they chose to stand on the side of our attackers, supporting those who attacked and physically dragged and carried us through the halls of their building, literally THROWING us out into the parking lot. Even taking it further to then ban us from the private viewing, the public visitation, from our parents' funeral, even the graveside service.”

“Hadley funeral homes have handled my grandparents arrangements in 1992 and 2001. My mother in 2007 and my father in 2022. Across generations and decades they have consistently done an excellent job showing unmatched caring, compassion, kindness, and professionalism. I would recommend them to anyone.”

“The owners were more concerned about their new carpet than my grieving sister. She had stood for hours as 900 people came to pay their respects for her son. I tried to take grapes and cheese to her so she had something to eat, but was told by the wife of one of the Hadleys that I could not take it into the room where the greeting line was because it might get on the carpet. My sister didn't want to leave and eat in the kitchen area because people had been waiting to see her for hours. We will never use this place for the rest of our family.”
