You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“When my husband was diagnosed, we began looking for a funeral home to provide services when the time came. We ended up looking into three funeral homes, so I will list the things that stood out the most between Enders & Shirley and the other homes, and additional aspects of the services Enders & Shirley provided that were greatly appreciated and only confirmed that we made the best choice. First, the family owns and operates all aspects of the business. I'm talking about EVERYTHING. They were the ones that sold me the services, came in the middle of the night when my husband passed, ran the funeral services, and handled the cremation. Nothing was handled by a middle man, third-party sales person, sourced out, or sent elsewhere. With that in mind, I reach my second point - the family is local to the area. And I do mean local - I even ran into Kim while grocery shopping one day. You don’t need to worry that they are not available, or need to come from 3 hours away to provide services. Third, the facilities are far superior to the competition. The crematory is immaculate, large enough to allow family to observe if wanted, and the funeral home is gorgeous. My best friend works in the medical field and has been to dozens of funerals over the years, and even she commented on how nice the funeral home was compared to what she normally sees. Fourth, there were about a thousand things that I didn’t even have to think about because they took care of it for me. This was probably the most impactful because it’s incredibly hard to try and wrap up all the little details when someone passes, and having a helping hand in that process really made all the difference and helped to ease the burden. Finally, I would like to touch on just how compassionate and kind everyone was. Anytime I had a question or needed anything at all, they were always ready to help, ensured that I had everything I needed, and were consummate professionals at every turn.”

“Our son recently passed away from a motorcycle accident and his body was taken to Enders & Shirley Funeral Home. as you can imagine our family was devastated and we still are. The incredible staff was absolutely incredible. We live in Martinsburg near another Funeral home about a few hours, Noah and Crystal were so loving toward us that I could not think about moving our son anywhere else. I actually felt that they were like family. They made everything so easy and organized. I can’t say enough about this incredible Family owned business. They were fantastic heartwarming and so sympathetic towards our loss. I let them know that I will certainly use them for when I am out to rest. They know how to make it easy for a grieving family. A1 all the way Thank you again, The Montanaro Family”
