You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We used Keene-Brown in Nov & Dec for my mother's services and passing. From consulting to planning and everything in between they were absolutely amazing. My mother passed at home and they were fast and very easy to work with. John was amazing with giving us all kinds of details that we needed about cremation, collaborating with the church, the celebration of life afterwards, the obituary, the prayer cards. Anything we had a question about and he also told us about things we would have never thought of asking about the death certificate and legal parts. Lisa was amazing with helping me through writing the obituary, planning the slide show and working with our family. My father, my brother and me all highly recommend them. They were sensitive, kind, attentive and supportive every moment that we dealt with them!! They now have customers for life.”

“John put my mind at ease with all the detail that goes into planning a service. He is not pushy, doesn’t rush you and after speaking with him I felt going with Brown Funeral home in North Smithfield was the best choice. Lisa was also great. She helped with the details for that day as well and kept me on track with what needed to be done. She went above and beyond getting the slideshow done and making a backup for me as well. Especially at a time of sorrow, you want to work with good hearted people of which they both were. Highly recommend!”

“Without the consent of the family, John Lalumiere (the Managing Director at Keene-Brown Funeral Home) took it upon himself to submit paperwork to the Veterans Association for the grave marker of my father. Obviously he is unfamiliar with the rules and regulations of the cemeteries that he deals with as he left out information that the family was allowed to have engraved on the stone. Our family submitted paperwork to the Veterans Association with the CORRECT information, but we kept getting denials of our request for a veterans grave marker all the while unaware that this paperwork was submitted by John. Much to our surprise, the grave marker was installed and we discovered that the mistake was made. After some lengthy research, my sister approached John who finally admitted that he submitted the paperwork. John made repeated assurances that he will make it right and will have no cost to our family. My father's stone was initially installed at the end of last summer (2017). It is now May 2018 and our repeated phone messages to John have gone unanswered. It is complete disrespect to my family and mostly to my father's legacy to ignore our phone calls. In the end we have memories to keep our departed loves one with us. The etchings on a grave marker is such a personal and final reminder that this soul once had a value in life here on earth.”
