You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“If you truly care or hold respect for the Toombs family and their legacy, I would advise going with a different funeral home. As this one has treated my family members who were raised doing hard work in this establishment and myself as burdens. Only after my grandfather died, that is. One of the ladies in the office, without words, actually gave me a box of my granddad’s belongings (at the time, early 2018). All without saying any condolences about my father. TRAMMELL T. TOOMBS. Who had just passed. No greetings or anything. No words, at all directly to me. Just “come get your granddad’s belongings” through a family member was how it was communicated. Then they also had the audacity to put my daddy in a very cheap casket. His hands were grey from what I later learned were improper embalming issues. So he wore gloves. (At least Mr. Smith picked out a nice suit. He, Mr. Duncan, and Mrs. Fields were the only ones to treat me kindly after my grandfather died.) Thinking about all of this now, I find it to be incredibly undignified and disrespectful on the behalf of the current & previous owners. . Another funny little story…Ms. Crystal intentionally avoided me a few years ago. When I reached out through email about wanting to place my life insurance agent cards in the office. Life insurance and funeral homes are final expenses. Go hand in hand, so I thought. It made sense to me as I get no benefits from this company, but they use the respect of my family’s name. You would think ‘TOOMBS by Crystal’ would willingly support the only sole grandchild of Reginald Toombs. But no, she shooed me away with excuses of needing to set up different times. Just to simply place cards in the office? While I was going to be in town at the time… The least she could do at this point is take my family’s last name out of ‘her’ business name. Since she doesn’t want actual association or supporting the last surviving family members (my aunt and myself). She should be quite grateful I’m not interested in going to school out of spite. That and my aunt are exhausted from legal issues concerning conversion back to a REAL Toombs practice. If possible to leave 0 stars, I absolutely would. Please note I’m not getting on here to slander anyone for anything untrue out of unresolved hard feelings. All of this and much more has occurred as wrongdoings against my family. I think it’s about time something has been said. The community needs to know.”

“I am a firm believer that God gives you what you need when you need it. My Family couldn't be more pleased with the respect and dignity shown to us. I truly apologize to their staff for having to experience something that we had no control over yet remaining totally professional. Their staff's level of professionalism was truly tested and how they handled it gave me and Family a chance to say our farewells in peace. I especially want to thank Ms Cynthia Bankhead for making everything about the experience pleasant for myself and my family with Toombs by Crystal Funeral Home.”

“We have used this funeral home a couple times before now and always were pleased with the results and service, however, today for my sister was very troublesome. It was nothing against the facility or anything like that. It was the makeup. She did not look like she was sleeping. She looked dead. Her face was colored blueish grey. It was so bad that we opted to close the casket so that she wasn't visible, and even told my dad not to see her. This made a hard situation even harder. I won't be using them again.”
