You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“The most frustrating thing that someone can deal with after the loss of a loved one is being met with a lack of empathy and compassion. Our experience with the National Funeral Home was once so good, but instead turned so sour. My mother and I had purchased a funeral package for my grandfather last year knowing that he was in poor health. We wanted to make sure we were not scrambling at the last moment and that we had everything paid for and squared away. The package we ended up going with was upwards of $13,000. Imagine our surprise when after my grandfather passes, and we are hit with surprise fee after surprise fee. $895 for an additional 4 hours usage of the cathedral and one of their meeting rooms. Joyce wanted to also charge us another $895 for the set up of a Buddhist table set up. Not to mention, charging upward of $500 to have a witnessed cremation. I do not respect the exploitation of a family’s grief during a time when they should have been met with empathy. So many hidden fees totaling over $1500 dollars when we’ve already made arrangements beforehand. Why not tell us upfront that there would be additional fees? I once had so much respect for this funeral home and their staff. We had such a good experience with the loss of my grandmother in 2014. This experience was entirely different and left such a terrible taste in our mouths. I hope National Funeral Home really does some reforming on the way they communicate their fees to families. Additionally, the day often grandfathers funeral, there had been terrible flooding in the facility. We were not made aware of this until arriving for the funeral. We were then limited in the rooms we were able to use. There was no warning or acknowledgment from Joyce or her team until we got there the day of the funeral. Baseboards were ripped out everywhere. The construction and cleaning was so loud and distracting.”

“Valeri was absolutely wonderful to work with. She helped my mom and I understand the deed to the memorial space and took the time to explain all the plaque changes we could make, especially since we had just finished paying for it. She answered every single question we had with so much patience and care. Scheduling the appointment was very easy, and the fact that she met with us on Christmas Eve meant so much to us. She was incredibly kind and did an amazing job translating and clearing up any confusion between my mom and I in both Spanish and English. Valeri treated us with so much respect and patience. It felt comforting to talk things through with her, and she made it clear that she was always willing to help and be there for us. Overall, it was a really great experience, and we are very grateful for her kindness and support during such an emotional process.”

“Obviously to have to use their services is probably one of the more stressful situations in life. The team, especially Kyra who I worked with directly made it all extremely easy. She was always accessible, quick to answer any questions, and absolutely amazing at getting everything we wanted for services. Highly recommend them for when you're family goes through this process”
