You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Want to thank Savannah for being such a kind and helpful asset in our time of grief. She was helpful in aiding us and answered the questions we had. Also, want to thank the people that had a hand in handling my dad's body through the process. The care they showed from start to finish was so helpful and minds at ease, knowing he was in great hands. Received his ashes toda, and you can see the care that was taken to ensure a beautiful reception. Thank you so much.”

“We unexpectedly lost our son in Sept. 2018 and Paul and the rest of the staff at A Simple Cremation were able to help guide us through the process of determining how best to handle our final decisions with our son with compassion and kindness. They were more than willing to accommodate our needs and did so with consideration and sensitivity. They did their best to help us through an unbearable situation. We are forever thankful.”

“The people who came to my home were disrespectful, inconsiderate and culturally tone deaf - cheerfully walked in my door asking “how’s everyone feelin’?!” while we sat next to my dead mother, as if we were all getting ready for a field day in the sun. They made assumptions about who they were to be speaking to, legally, about processes - which led to misunderstandings that could have been avoided had they had the decency to ask and establish the rightful point of contact. They ignored me when I spoke up and instead conversed with male in our household, for whatever reason. They didn’t bother asking about any cultural practices and crossed several ignorant lines as a result. Nobody explained any expectations to us, it took nearly two weeks for them to get the paperwork sorted out and nobody called to let us know when her ashes were ready. Apparently, prices fluctuate because there’s no ethical cap on how much you can charge anybody and they move the price points. Also, prepare yourself because everyone you speak to will try and upsell their products and services to you even if you tell them exactly what you want to start with and ask them to respectfully NOT treat it like a chance to make more profit on the exploitation of your family’s grief - they absolutely will do this every chance they get because making profit is their priority and objective and that’s made extremely clear. If you need an affordable option, this is pretty much all you have in WNC and it’s a shame. My heart and condolences to anyone who uses this business as a last and only resort - may your experience be better quality and your loved one be respected.”
