You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I used A Basic Cremation, which is the same company. Teri would hardly communicate with me regarding my husband's undertaking. I am a 42 year old widow, that is hard enough, but my husband passed away two states away from where we live and I had to rely on the funeral home to communicate with me. They disappointed greatly in that regard and I also feel that I was intentionally lied to. I had to wait the weekend +2 days for an appointment to speak to Teri to make the cremation arrangement while he lay at the Morgue. When my appointment time came, no call. I waited an hour assuming that she was delayed. When I called, Teri blamed the receptionist for the error because "they don't work by appointment". Later, Teri would claim she couldn't get back to me because she had back to back "appointments" and was on the phone every time I called. Once my payment was taken, no communication. The day he was supposed to be cremated came and went and not even an email was sent. I wanted to know if it had been done and what day to expect him delivered. All of my messages went unreturned with the exception of one email which blamed Summit County for a delay in the cremation service and a promise to get a tracking number for the package mailed that day. I later confirmed with Summit Co. that their office was not involved and had they been communicated with, they could have immediately resolved the issue. I paid $150 to have the cremains mailed to me, and never got a tracking number! Teri promised to get me one in her single email to me, but never replied and wouldn't take or return my calls. I was a hostage afraid to leave my house for fear I would miss the delivery and my sweet husband would be left on the stoop for package thieves. He finally arrived unexpectedly and I was thankfully home, but my calls and email went completely unreturned from Teri. Not. One. Word. Still. Her lack of professionalism, honesty, and compassion considering the nature of her career are abhorrent and I absolutely recommend you look elsewhere during this difficult time as this business only compounded my sorrow.”

“First, thank you for not taking advantage of people who are grieving. My dad suffered and passed away from cancer complications. My mother’s bills are absurd. Your company was thoughtful, kind, respectful and didn’t take advantage of my mother’s finances. The cremation process was easy and the services we needed were reasonably priced. The online process was incredibly easy and straightforward. The prices and services were listed clearly. Travis worked with us step by step and was in constant communication. I was impressed with this no-BS company who is professional and compassionate. We need more companies like this in the United States. Particularly, companies who DO NOT take advantage of people grieving. Death is big business. Companies take full advantage of those who are grieving and in pain. It’s disgusting. Tulip, is refreshing and safe. Working with Tulip was easy, no hidden fees, no weird packages, no random costs. Just basic human compassion and decency. I highly recommend Tulip. I know we are told to go straight to the mortuary and funeral companies. I strongly recommend that if you want cremation, go to Tulip. They are timely and forthright. Also, you aren’t pressured to have a funeral immediately. I called mortuaries before Tulip and was astounded how far they pushed me to get things done and how off put they were when I said “my mother is not ready to have a service yet”. In fact, they were nice when I called and changed personality quickly when I said we weren’t ready for a service. Which informed me their priorities are money based. Tulip is people based. Tulip cares about their costumers. We are taking our time with grieving for the loss of my father. Funerals are incredibly stressful. Take time to grieve your loved one. Tulip gave us that freedom without judgement. Also, they took care of getting the body from the hospital, took care of all the death certificates and notified us. I can’t say enough about Tulip. Except, thank you. Thank you for being a company that recognizes families are dealing with incredible loss and pain. Your compassion, professionalism, ability to get things accomplished in a timely manner and price for cremation were appreciated and noticed. Sincerely, Alexandra Trosper”

“Called before husband died. Was told cost and assured it would not cost more due to his weight. They called day after and price was twice what we were told. Called back and was told director would call. Took 2 days and as a "courtesy" they would take some of extra cost off. Called later to confirm day/time of pick up for ashes. Was told to email director. Emailed director and was told to check email for confirmation. I want to work here because no one works here. Its all "check your email." They don't honor or disclose information. The thing is i would have paid the extra charge if they had told us when we called. Do not appreciate smoke and mirrors.”
