You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My mom passed recently from cancer, it was pretty unexpected. She didn't have much together as far as a plan for what might happen after, she just wasn't the kind of person to plan for that, she loved life and wasn't expecting to pass. She didn't have much at the end of her life, it's a surreal feeling to think most of the belongings of one of the most important people in your life could fit in a night stand. As she never got remarried and I was the oldest child, it was my job to figure out what to do. I consulted friends and family and we thought a direct cremation might be the way to go while we figure things out. Society doesn't give you a ton of time to figure out this sort of stuff so I got all her personal information together and we set up a cremation with a memorial that we will plan later this spring when the eldest family can make it during warmer weather. I had asked for recommendations in the Pittsburgh area for inexpensive cremations on Reddit as I was paying out of pocket and this funeral home was recommended hundreds of times. The process was thankfully easy with them, I had already started writing an obituary for her and had most of her personal info from her family for her death certificates. Was able to do most of it from home. I was weary of the reviews at first but I feel as long as you have information and plans together before you contact them, things will go much more smoothly. Everything was wrapped up within two weeks. Gary was a nice man, we chatted about Primanti Brothers for a few minutes as I had just come from the Strip District location when I went to retrieve her ashes. Looking at the other reviews I think they're just a busy facility due to their attainable pricing. I feel if you have everything together you'll have a better experience. I appreciate what these people do when you're in my situation.”

“Very very unprofessional and sarcastic. I cannot comprehend how in this line of work not giving straight answers to straight questions with out sarcasm or belittling. Theres zero sympathy or compassion. This business requires at least some. In a grieving time we were treated as a nuisance and a paycheck. Would never use again. If you don't want to deal with grieving people anymore, hire someone that will.”

“Process was simple and straight forward. Price was great to other funeral homes shopped. If/when in the process again I would come back.”
