You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Unfortunately, we were forced to need these services twice in the same year. From the moment I contacted Freddy, everything was smooth and easy. He is very professional, respectful, and compassionate, and never attempts to profit from the pain of the situation. They did an excellent job with my mother-in-law; she looked beautiful. Nine months later, I contacted him again for my mom. She requested something simple cremation, no viewing, the ashes to be disposed of, and not to have them kept at home for more than 24 hours. Freddy respected all of our wishes completely. He was straightforward, not sales-driven, and truly respectful of our family and our mom’s requests. He even held her ashes for me so I wouldn’t have to keep them at home, exactly as she asked. Their prices are reasonable, and their service is handled with dignity and care. I definitely recommend San Jose funeral homes.”

“The only good thing I can say is that they were prompt and very courteous when picking up my dad from the nursing home. After that, everything was very disappointing and upsetting. My dad, who was 91 years old, was made to look like a ventriloquist dummy with a grin that was almost ear to ear and very "Joker" like & had round circles of red blush on his cheeks. We could see the rolled cotton under his lips that were stretched very tightly that I don't know how they glued them together. When I told the attendant at the Pelicano location, he said they "fix can it for tomorrow". I don't think so, since they were sealing his casket after the viewing. That was very insulting to our intelligence and sorrow. The floral spray for the casket only fully decorated on one side, the other side only had fillers and a few flowers. It was very apparent when I saw it when they wheeled him out of the Church. The director was disorganized at the Church and at the cemetery was in such a hurry to leave that she made us leave the gravesite to unload the flowers from her car and then commented that she'd "take care of any arrangements" we didn't want. I told her we'd lay them by the road so she could leave. Needdless to say, the plants that were for the family were gone when we went to pick them up. I know the people in the area have little choice but to use them, but the funeral home should still be more respectful of the grieving families on such a trying occasion. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. If you can, use another funeral home. They can provide the same service and take your loved one to any church and/or cemetery. I would have taken photos but I don't want to remember or see my dad like that ever again. It was horrible to see what they did to him. He looked better right after he passed away than after they "prepared" him for viewing.”

“Losing our baby back in April was not easy. We never imagined that instead of planning a baby shower we would have to be organizing her funeral. Although these were very hard moments Freddy helped us through the whole process. He was very friendly, patient and caring. He helped with every detail and was very supportive of the ideas that we had. He also gave us some advises on things we would have never thought but at the end had so much meaning. Thank you Freddy for your professionalism and kindness that helped us so much during these difficult moments.”
