You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My father recently passed away unexpectedly and our family obviously had a very difficult time processing through the shock and grief. Larry, the director at Oakeys was present, kind, patient and empathetic. The team was very nice. Tommy supported our family with the service. We ran into a bottle neck with the crematorium and the team handled it with grace. After the memorial we discovered the urn had arrived with the back not fully secured. Tommy took the time to take my dad back to the crematorium after the service and then personally bring him to our home once the urn was adjusted. These situations are delicate and I couldn’t have felt more supported than with this crew. Thank you Oakeys for your care during this important and sacred time for my family.”

“I must say that the staff are all really nice and respectful. Tommy was very patient and kind when I made my mother's arrangements. The man who was there to help direct my mother's service was extremely kind as well. The other man working was wonderful too. He took the time to make origami for my two children to make them smile. They made sure I had help and anything I needed. Although, I had made a video to play of my mother that I didn't get to show because they couldn't figure out how to connect my phone or iPad to the system. I had to play a different version of the song I chose because they couldn't get my CD to work and used Spotify instead. Once the song was over, it began to play another song because they couldn't get it turned off. I do realize it was a simple mistake but I do recommend the staff has a better training when it comes to the technology. For the amount of money you pay, there shouldn't be issues like that. It's very frustrating especially when you want things done in a perfect manor to say goodbye to your loved one. The service was beautiful but I was really disappointed I couldn't play the video I had worked so hard on. But the staff was sincerely sympathetic and very very kind. They were patient when the service was over and didn't rush us out of there giving all the family and friends time to catch up and talk. They also had everything ready for me as I was walking out of the door. Tommy was also patient with me figuring out how I was going to pay for the services and made sure I understood where every penny of my money was going. They also were great at making sure I got all of my mother's belongings from the hospital and all of it was there. They are patient with letting you identify and say goodbye to your loved one before the cremation process. I do recommend them for your choice of a funeral home. There facility is also very clean and beautiful. Tommy constantly asked us if we needed anything and asked if it was okay every time he needed to step out of the room. He was wonderful at connecting with us personally and professionally. He was also very understanding and patient with my young children being with me while making the arrangements. Thank you Oakey's.”
