You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My mom passed away a little over 3 years ago. I was contacted by Memorial Park Southwoods about buying a marker for her gravesite at Elwood Cemetery about a month after we buried her. Long story short after choosing and paying for her marker, it was never ordered until the beginning of this year (2025) and this was after multiple calls by me and in- person visits to see what was going on and finally getting someone to do what should have been done years prior by Ms. Sandra & Herb (smh) and being beyond frustrated of their lack of concern for a marker that I clearly paid full price for on 9.10.22 and nothing was done until I made an in-person visit and spoke to Anthony Reed. My mom’s marker came in June 2025 (FINALLY) and Natasha Jefferson insured that it would be installed but failed on her promise that my mom’s headstone would be installed and kept giving me the run around. Anyhow, I am giving this review 5 stars because of the compassion, consideration, & honesty and care that Anthony Reed took to ensure that my mom’s headstone was installed and eased all my frustrations. He kept me in the loop every step of the way, and for that I am eternally grateful. He even took a picture on the day of installation (10/2/2025 - 2 weeks before my mommy’s birthday) at her gravesite to ease my concerns. Anthony, thank you so much!!! Words cannot express my gratitude for you. With Anthony as a member of Memorial Park Southwoods, he has restored my faith in them and their business. Anthony got the job done!!!”

“When I needed cemetery services for my relative I visited South woods and my counselor was Amber Jones. She greated me and we sat down and explained everything to me. She is such an asset to memorial Park South woods. I left well informed and returned back to make my purchase. Thanks to counselor Amber Jones.”

“I wish this cemetery would get its act together with their management and the office staff at this location. Over the last nine months I’ve had to literally beg for sod to be laid at my son’s burial site but instead I have been “promised” told “ this should never happen”, “I promise this will be handled today”. By a number of office staff from Sandra, to Sylvia to Christy with a “C”. My son’s temporary marker was even placed on the floor under the desk of an employee. This was very disheartening. It wasn’t until I called last week and spoke to Herb that not only was someone called while I was placed on hold but he also had the compassion and patience to listen and provide pictures once the grounds was made it right. Herb is the kind of people that’s needed in today world. People that have compassion and empathy not those that are in your office today! Because death will always be a point of life we have to face and people should always be kind with empathy and compassion not those who lack it. I know Mr Herb can’t be the only one and if so. It’s time to rethink! The first picture- after multiple calls and they should stuck some grass out. Second picture- the call Herb placed. Thank you!”
