You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This was not my first choice, however, my mother purchased a preened plan in 1994. So I went with my mother’s wishes. The first time my sister & I went to House of Winston Sonia was nice but her condolences were more perfunctory than sympathetic. The amount that my mother purchased was less than the amount of the service. Sonia offered us a discount rate, but we would have to pay the Pastor. We took the offer knowing that the discounted rate was the exact same price. My sister & I had a good laugh. Two days later someone from the office called to discuss my FATHER. My father died in 1979. I told her to take a minute to see if she wanted to talk about my mother, she did. I came into the office to pay the balance & Sonia asked for a picture of my mother. I sent her the same picture that my sister gave her @ the initial meeting. She said it was to see how my mother combed her hair but they didn’t comb her hair, so what was the picture really for? Before the service took place, December 18, 2025, Sonia would call me back within the same day. Since the service, I have not talked to her, I would leave messages but she wouldn’t return my call. My latest calls were Monday, January 12, 2025 & Wednesday, January 14, 2025 respectively, no return call. The date of my mother’s death was November 27, 2025, I’m still waiting for her death certificate”

“Completely unprofessional and rude . Dr. Sonia was delightful but everyone else here is rude , unprofessional and doesn’t take direction well. Not only have I called several times to get an update on my mother’s remains , they messed up her death certificate . They never return phone calls and seem to not relay information well. I have tried to be patient and respectful, especially when dealing with a bunch of elders , but the way these people handle business is just plain ridiculous . And you try to give your people the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately they check off every stereotype there is when it comes to the issues people have with black owned/ran businesses . Run as far away as you possibly can . Do not recommend whatsoever .”
