You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Stewart Funeral Home was entrusted with my family member’s service a few days ago. While some aspects were handled appropriately, we were deeply disappointed by how the viewing was scheduled. Two viewings were booked back to back, and during our time we were told we needed to leave so another family could begin theirs. This was extremely distressing for our family during an already painful moment. A viewing should allow families the time and space to grieve without feeling rushed or displaced. Booking viewings back to back shows a lack of care and sensitivity, and I hope the funeral home reconsiders this practice for future families.”

“I have used this funeral home for quite a few family members over the past several years and the level of compassion, professionalism, and service has declined immensely. I just tried to use them recently for the passing of my dad and the service is beyond unprofessional. One of the funeral home workers, Mr. Harris is rude and very disrespectful. He does not belong working in a profession where people are dealing with loss and grief. He is an awful person and needs to retire. I hope that when I become his age, I do not become bitter, rude, and very disrespectful to others as he is. I hope his family does not receive the same treatment that he gives to families that are dealing with the loss of loved ones when his time comes to die. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere to take care of your loved one. They like act they are doing you a favor here and that's not how it's supposed to be.”

“My husband and I had the privilege of serving a grieving family from our church at Stewart’s recently, we were treated with the utmost respect and professionalism. The facilities were clean and well appointed, we were welcomed warmly. The funeral director Mr. Bowman was so attentive, cordial, sensitive and professional. I highly recommend Stewart Funeral Home and Mr. Bowman.”
