You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Very kind, personable, professional, and accommodating. Just what we needed during our time of mourning. Nice kitchen area for food and beverages. We were the only ones, so had ample parking. Our luncheon was held across the parking lot at John Cowleys that made it very convenient for all.”

“Nice, cozy environment. Wheelchair accessible. Staff have wonderful demeanors & are very caring. A bit warm for my comfort, but maybe that's to accommodate seniors or others sensitive to the cold. Soft drinks (no ice machine) & coffee included. Would be nice if there was soap in the kitchenette so people could wash their hands. To be fair, I probably could have asked about that-but didn't have the motivation.”

“On February 15, 2025 my beloved wife of 47 years, Kathy, passed into the presence of the Lord. The family’s wishes were to have her honored and treated with the utmost of dignity and respect. From the initial phone call, informing the care givers Heeney-Sundquist that my wife’s physical body had to be removed from our home, the cremation and Home Going Celebration I felt as if I was dealing with dear family. The staff listened to my daughter’s and my wishes for Kathy, did not try to “up sell” any products or unnecessary services and went over and beyond what we contracted to make sure every aspect of the process was handled with compassion and love. I was even contacted after the event to see how I was doing. Losing a loved one is a stressful time in anyone’s life. I was pleased that Heeney-Sundquist were there to provide 5 star compassionate care. In closing their pricing was very reasonable and even now feel that I received way more than I paid for. I would encourage anyone to entrust their loved ones to their care. Michael Adams”
