You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“For the Hampton roads/ Norfolk to be a military town and the mayor the owner of this establishment they really mistreat the veterans. My family and I spoke with a rep about the plan we had and confirmed and paid. When the funeral day came they did not have my 25 years veteran father's remains ready. During that week we contacted them and nothing was mentioned of the remains not being ready for the funeral. They provided no reason for the delay. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER. We still had to call and push them to let us know when the remains would be ready. No compensation or compassion was given for the lateness. It is very difficult to mourn and have closer. While dealing with a unprofessional company such as Metropolitan. You will hear more from my family. No thanks given.”

“My father passed in January and we have yet to receive his remains from cremation. We had to hold his memorial service with a damn basket full of pictures. It has been almost month. The funeral home offered little understanding as to why the cremation process takes so long or if there was even a date for his remains. A process that we thought seemed so seamless has drawn out our mourning. It’s almost as if they do not truly care for the family and that this is only a financial process for them. I am saddened to think Kenneth Alexander and his family would provide this type of service to retired Navy veteran and his family!”

“I can’t thank Metropolitan enough for the care and compassion they showed my family during one of the hardest times of our lives. From the moment we walked through their doors, we were treated with kindness, respect, and genuine concern. Shelita handled every detail of my mother’s arrangements with such professionalism and dignity, making sure our wishes were honored and that everything was exactly as we envisioned. Their guidance made the process feel less overwhelming, and their support gave us comfort when we needed it most. We are truly grateful to the entire staff for helping us celebrate my Mother’s life in such a beautiful and meaningful way. I would highly recommend Metropolitan Funeral Services to any family in need of compassionate care during a difficult time.”
