You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I would give 0 stars if I could! Our family used this funeral home twice in the past two months, due to unexpected deaths, and we will never use them again. We used this funeral home in December for my brother and again in January for my grandmother. In both cases, we explicitly requested to be present for the cremation. For my grandmother, we were told they would notify us once her cremation was scheduled and confirm that the timing worked for our family. As recently as this past weekend, my mother was told they were still waiting on the medical examiner’s permit. Then today, my mother received a call informing her that my grandmother had already been cremated, without our knowledge, without our consent, and without any attempt to schedule or notify us. We were working with Michelle, who is absolutely awful. She was reportedly out sick for a few days, and instead of ensuring continuity of care, the funeral home went ahead and cremated my grandmother anyway. This funeral home knows our family well. We had worked with them just weeks earlier and had been in their offices numerous times. We called consistently, asking for updates and scheduling. None of that mattered. I understand that people get sick. What is completely unacceptable is that Michelle did not coordinate with Mark or Desiree, who also work there, to notify the families she was responsible for. This is not a minor oversight. This is life, death, and final rites. There is no excuse for this level of negligence. At best, this funeral home is irresponsible, careless, and undisciplined. At worst, their actions raise deeply disturbing concerns about how their cremations are handled. There was no reason for such urgency that justified excluding the family, especially when cremations are conducted at the funeral home itself. Because we were not allowed to be present, we now have no way of knowing whether the ashes we will receive are truly my grandmother’s. That is a horrifying reality to impose on a grieving family. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. When my brother died, we worked with Desiree, who somehow ordered an urn that included only the inscription message, but forgot my brother’s name, date of birth, and date of death. She had my personal phone number, and I texted her the exact wording. Not once did she contact me or my mother to flag an issue, despite have our personal numbers. We only discovered the mistake after the memorial service and then had to bring the urn back to be corrected. The final insult is that they charged us again for the engraving of my brother’s name and dates, despite the mistake being entirely theirs. How do you order an urn without someone’s name? This funeral home is careless, unprofessional, and deeply disrespectful. Given the nature and gravity of their work, you would expect compassion, diligence, and basic competence. We received none of that. If you want proper treatment, transparency, the ability to be present for your loved one’s cremation, and confidence that remains and memorial items are handled correctly, do not come here. This funeral home should be out of business.”

“I would leave 0 stars if I could. Where to start. First when trying to schedule a time to meet with them after my Father in law passed away they were not at all open to working around our time and ability to get people together. We get there with 6 family members and are told no more than 4 allowed in to discuss arrangements. I sat out on the arrangements but after arrangements were made for the cremation I asked the funeral director if a furlough paper could be filled out and faxed for my brother in law who is incarcerated. (Mind you this was after the arrangements were made and she knew the services were going to be held 4 hours away and not in their funeral home) she said it would be no problem to fill the papers out and fax them. I gave her what info I had and told her i would update her when i had the funeral plans. Ther were insurance issues and she had called regarding payment saying they couldn't keep him on ice waiting for the insurance and needed to start the cremation process. I paid in full for the cremation so they could start and figured we could take care of the insurance on our end. I then asked when the remaines would be ready and she stated they couldn't start on the cremation because the death certificate had not been signed. So she was rushing to get started when she couldn't start.full info on the date time and location of the service and at that time was told she would fax the form over right now. Now four days later I have called to check the status on the furlough at the prison and I was informed they never received it. I am now being told from a gentleman who works for the funeral home tat they will not send it because we are not having the funeral there. They knew this from the beginning. We never gave them an impression that we would be having it there. They never called me to let me know this and I have called back three times to speak with the Women who lead me to believe it would be faxed amd they will not let me speak to her.”
