You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens helped us in our darkest hour while planning my mother’s funeral. Everything was made very easy from the beginning. The staff was great and very compassionate and patient with us. Every detail was provided and all of our family and friends kept commenting on how all the small details so perfectly fit and described my mother. Thank you Forest Lawn for helping make the day beautiful for my mom.”

“Every step involved in my mom's cremation and placement in her final resting place was met with an incredible amount of compassion, understanding, care, empathy, and professionalism by everyone at Forest Lawn. They were all invaluable in helping me navigate this very difficult experience.”

“Although we had a difficult and rather rude experience with the funeral coordinator, the burial coordinator and all other staff were excellent. The site itself is beautiful and very well-maintained, though space and options for burial are limited.. I would recommend to anyone who uses Forest Lawn, to ask a lot of questions about every aspect of the process as there are different charges and fees for almost everything and the disclosure sometimes can be a little bit confusing and shaded if you do not ask questions. For example, we were not offered an option on our burial vault (what the casket goes inside) for our mother but it turns out that there are several options and the one we were given was not the lowest priced one, which is what we would have preferred. Of course now too late to change. Prices can be dramatically different depending on the options that are presented to you. Did not feel like there was a complete discussion of all options to us.”
