You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“A dear friend of mine transitioned and his services were held at GSF on N. 90th Street. I wasn't able to attend but emailed (per the funeral home's request) the condolence letter from the Desk of my Ministries. The letter was emailed (with all pertinent information) a week in advance of services. Later the afternoon of my friend's service, I received information from a family member of mine that they had the condolence letter. The letter had been read at a totally different person's service and my family member recognized my name. My family member retrieved the letter from GSF (texting me she had it and what had happened). I was and still am very upset and disappointed by this great error. I called and was told that the Director of the Funeral Home would call me back momentarily. As of the next evening, I still haven't received a call. I realized mistakes can be made and in this instance, a redo is totally out of the question. But at least I expected to get an apology from someone! I am very disappointed and feeling totally disrespected. The deceased and his family meant and means so much to me...”

“Very friendly, welcoming, and supportive! All of you did such a great job… one thing you forgot is the shirt my mom was wearing that I asked you to save along with the sheets. I got the sheets but not my mom’s last shirt she was wearing… I asked for that shirt and it was nowhere in my mom’s belongings when I got her home. I am absolutely heartbroken I couldn’t get that last shirt that my mom was wearing.. I mean I understand the process. I thank you all for your hard work and dedication for all of our loved ones. You all are greatly appreciated ❤️🌹”
