You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My family had found themselves at this funeral home twice in the period of three weeks. This funeral home went above and beyond for everything we could have possibly imagine to have the most beautiful service ever. Both of our grandfathers were veterans and they made sure they were honored in the best possible way. It was a beautiful sendoff. Ben Fisher and his crew exceeded our expectations and we will always use them for any unfortunate events in the future. Could not have asked for a better experience”

“I just lost my father last night 11/27/2024 and I unsure of what is next so, I was trying to be proactive. I do not know who works the answering service, but surely empathy goes a long ways, which she lacked in, it’s bad enough that those calling already feel broken, but when you have someone on the other side of the call that doesn’t show any emotion flat out dry all the way around, that throws the family off even more. I know that y’all deal with this on a daily basis, but the caller does not. In your line of work EMPATHY goes a long ways.”

“Whidden-Mc Lean funeral home was amazing for my dads service. Marc kept me updated on every single detail. He walked my family through the tough process and decisions that needed to be made for the service. We were able to customize our dad’s casket. When the weather took a turn for the worse Marc had a back up plan, to help keep my family dry and to prevent any illness for our elderly family members. The entire staff were nice and helpful, they treated us like family!”
