You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This is very upsetting that you paid for services not granted. I paid in full my husband cremation to include his beautiful URN, I ordered at the same time I paid for everything on time. Well my husband passed away July 26,2025 and here I am still waiting for my husband URN, I’ve called follow-up and called follow-up over and over again!! It’s in order they tell me continue to tell me!! Then no fault of the receptionist who say will leave a message to Michael a message, well Michael calls with a blocked number so I don’t have his own number to do follow ups with him directly. This is a very and I mean very painful situation that I don’t have my husband ashes nor his URN, 42 days later and I am still waiting! My husband birthday was 09.03.25 , celebrated his birthday and no ashes no URN.. If you do any business with this Funeral home , don’t pay them infull , once you do they don’t care to do any follow ups!! My husband Irving Ortiz Nieves , deserves to be respected, as his wife Sylvia Ortiz is beyond hurting because the lack of respect and follow-up NONE!! Please review anything you pay in advance! Very poor service and very little empathy 😢😢😢😢 Sylvia Ortiz”

“I had a great experience using Borinquen, despite the oscasion. I feel they treated my mom with so much dignity. The help I received from Oscar Hernandez was remarkable he really went above and beyond to make this as simple as possible for me.”

“Borinque Funeral Home is neither compassionate nor understanding of the family's pain. In addition to having a rude, indigent, and racist staff, their staff told me they wouldn't speak to me because they couldn't understand my accent. I think they forget they're in a state where most of their customers speak Spanish and have accents. I ordered flowers through their website, which never arrived, and instead of apologies, I received harsh treatment. Those flowers were the only way I could be present at my cousin's funeral.”
