You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I was pleased with the funeral home I found for a friend's mother. 4 till 8pm Viewing 50 prayer cards, Flowers on top of rental coffin ⚰️ Cremation and two death certificates. Credit card charges 3.5 percent no checks accepted. I didn't have my bank close by so I charged it. I could have used cash and saved 180.00 the family was in need. “My mother and I went to get an idea about the preparations for my grandmothers funeral but the lady who came to help us was in a rush and trying to avoid assisting us saying we came in too late when we did call them beforehand letting them know we were on our way and they verbally said it was okay and that they’ll wait. When she did come to assist us she barley looked us in the eye almost even rolling them with an attitude and rushing us. Never again, I wouldn’t want anyone else who is in mourning to experience such a person like that.”

“Let me start out by saying I am a dyckman general from Washington heights and I been living out here 37 years of my life !!!!!!!! I have been to 100 funerals at Ortiz !!!!! Pleases here me.My father passed away on Jan 2 ,2025 and the undertakers came to my house and somthing did not seem right . As a first timer who lost his father my mother called Ortiz funeral, at first I was not happy because I never understood the process of loosing a body but now know you call the city first . I say that to say for 7 days I could not sleep because of all these bad reviews how ever this was a total 360 from all the comments let me break it down and tell you my father had cancer and turn yellow they day he died , the day I arrive at Ortiz he look perfect just like himself if not even younger like he aged like wine amazing I understand it’s a sensitive topic and everyone is different but mines was a great story . No he did not have a rosary in hand but as a son I put it for him my advice to all would be please give Ortiz a chance because they are under new management and the women is a sweetheart be open minded a humble a lost is never easy .”
