You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Delivered flowers and a card from a well known company for a loved one’s service, addressed to the one who passed away. The family looked for it and didn’t see it. I received the flower company delivery confirmation photo (attached here). Apparently the funeral home placed the flowers in the service, but not the card. They found it later after I called. They barely offered an apology or to get the card to the family… just offering to send a picture of it. It’s too late. The damage is done. EDIT: the delivery confirmation photo had the card and flowers together with the name clearly written on the front. The owner response is disheartening and not showing accountability for the lack of care in their preparations. Would not trust my deceased loved one here if flowers and a card can’t even be managed.”

“Michael Coletta Sons Funeral Home is great. They really took care of my family and was sensitive to our loss. Their space is very comforting and spacious for family and friends to pay their respects. Also when our time of the wake was over, they did not hurry our family to leave. They checked on us throughout the wake to see if we needed anything. They were very sympathetic and our time there wasn't another transaction to them unlike other funeral homes.”

“This family owned business took care of three of my grand parents that passed away. A great family that cares. They were accommodating and helpful. I’ve been to other funeral homes that rushed us and seemed like they didn’t care. Highly recommend the Colettas.”
