You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I called Boston Cremation over a year ago to Pre-pay for cremation and Urns as part of spend down for Medicaid - not knowing how soon we would need to use it. Michael was very kind and thoroughly explained in detail how the whole process would work, starting with paperwork, then what would happen sometime in the future - from the phone call notifying them my Loved One passed away, the whole process from pickup, through cremation, until I would pick up his urn. My loved one lived in central MA, I live in NH. It was super convenient to fill out the initial Pre-pay documents on-line. Virginia was helpful with any questions I had filling out the documents. Less than a year later, my father passed away and I had to make the phone call late on a Friday night. At that time I was a little in shock, but I think it was Brian that answered my phone call. He was so sincere, kind and compassionate. From there it was Victoria who I spoke with who let me know they picked up my dad and when he would be ready for me to come get him. I needed to reschedule my pick up time a couple times as my mom just wasn't ready. When she was ready for the drive to get my father's urns, Victoria had kept an eye out for us and came outside to meet us and walk us inside. She was so very gentle, understanding and soothing with my mother (she has some cognitive decline and wasn't coping well). My father was a US Marine as well as a Mariner in the Merchant Marines, and as a nice suprise they gave us a really nice folded American Flag (we are not having a memorial service until spring in another state). In addition, Victoria and Elizabeth reached out a couple weeks later to check in on us during our period of grief. I can't thank everyone at Boston Cremation enough for all the kindness and compassion shown. We will be working with them again in the future. (hopefully not too soon!)”

“The staff at Boston Cremation in Malden were thoughtful, kind and most helpful with taking care of my aunt. From my first phone call to them to the follow up inquiries on how we were doing (months after my aunts passing) the staff made me feel that i could reach out to them at any time if i needed support. Would highly recommend their services.”

“The Hospice nurse recommended Boston Cremation. We, all new Dad wanted to be cremated but never thought who to call. After getting the recommendation I called and talked to Brian..he was very sympathetic to our situation and made the process so easy. I can not thank the whole team enough for the kindness they showed our family. Thanks so much for continuing to check in on us.”
