You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“After the death of our loved one, we didn't know what funeral home to choose. I saw this one and decided to give them a call. The ladies who I spoke to were so kind and answered all my questions. We met with Leon and he was great! Very kind and compassionate. He thoroughly explained everything and was happy to answer our questions! Highly recommend!”

“My cousins experience with Golden Gate was extremely unprofessional and emotional. She had explained that she was flying out on the 22nd and wanted to take her son’s ashes home. They assured her they would call but they never did. I had to call them for her and they told me that he was ready for pick-up on the day she was leaving, but there was no way I could get her there because we was 2.5 hours away and her flight was leaving that day. So, she had to paid for overnight shipping of $150. The receipt came back as a donation, which is not accurate because we did not want his remains donated to science! I had to call again for her today because she never received her son, and it had been over a week! Finally, I got ahold of someone, but they had no clue what was going on and no idea where he was. They finally found him and had him shipped, but what was frustrating was that he was ready for pick-up a week before my flight! No one called her! This location’s very unorganized and unprofessional behavior made us think for a week that they had given her son’s remains to science! I had to make them send me the cremation certificate to prove that the ashes where his and who knows if they would try to cover up the mistake and send her fireplace ashes instead of her son! No one should ever have to go through this especially when it’s the sudden death of your kid!!! I would NOT recommend them for anything! They didn’t even have her son ready for viewing even though they KNEW we would be there as we had an appointment! Also took them over a week to put up his obituary and had to push for it to be taken care of!”
