You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“It’s taken me a few weeks to find the right words, but I want to sincerely thank Grace, Bobby, and the entire team at Shives Funeral Home. They took exceptional care of our family during one of the most difficult times in our lives. Their compassion, attention to detail, and willingness to accommodate every need made the process of saying goodbye to my mom far less stressful. We’re deeply grateful for their support and kindness.”

“First, my mother's service was absolutely beautiful. It was everything I could have hoped for, and the actual funeral home itself is a gorgeous place for your love one's final farewell. Jake is an amazing member of their staff, and he will forever be an important part of my mother's service and burial. He is extremely personable, caring, and an all-around great young man who will do his best to help you through your time of grief, and I hope he knows how much I appreciate his guidance and support through that process. I did have a couple of issues unrelated to the service that were mostly due to miscommunication, but let me assure you, they were handled. I won't go into the details as every similar situation in the future may not be handled the same, and I don't want to set that expectation. But, I was more than satisfied with how Bobby resolved the situation. It showed me that they truly care for the families they serve. Kimberly is also a wonderful person to talk to, very empathetic, and she'll help with any probate questions. I also appreciated Danny's speech during the service. Last, but not least, I loved William so much! He is the original owner (or one of the two?) of Shives, and he was so sweet during my mom's viewing, service, and burial. A very sunny disposition, and you can tell he really enjoys helping families. I would absolutely use Shives in the future.”

“My family had a wonderful experience working with Shives recently with my father's passing. The level of service and attention to detail was outstanding and very much appreciated. I would recommend Shives to anyone looking in the greater Columbia area for arrangements.”
