You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I came to Johnson City from Texas the beginning of December 2024. My grandfather passed away suddenly. He left me as his power of attorney and basically in charge of everything else. I was set to see him on Weds December 10th. Unfortunately he passed away at 2am that morning before I could get there. I have never been the one in charge taking care of final arrangements. I was emotional and not sure what to do. I left the VA hospital with a few funeral home names. I went to one before going to this one and was just uneasy from the start. So I left there and went to Jonesborough Funeral home. I had no appointment. John had no clue I was even coming. I just showed up. From the second I arrived he made me feel welcomed. We sat down and I told him my story of how I ended up in front of him. My grandfather did have life insurance but I was 100% clueless on how to use it. John explained everything to me. We worked out my grandfathers wishes and he presented me with a very fair total. Even gave me advice on other things as I had no clue what to do. I walked away from there that evening with my heart at ease. I was terrified walking in. The next day we had to stop back by to sign some papers. Once again John was the kind hearted soul that I needed to navigate through this. He even gave me directions on how to navigate where I was going since they still had some devastation from the floods and landslides. He gave me his number and told me not to hesitate at all if I had any questions! He told me to call 24/7. I was only in town for 4 days to wrap up my grandfathers affairs. It was supposed to be a visit to hug him and spend time with him. Unfortunately other plans were in motion for me. The wonderful staff at the VA hospital and John helped ease my heart. They made sure I knew I wasn’t alone. I went back to Texas and spoke to John approx 2 weeks later. He called to ensure I received everything. He once again displayed amazing character and concern and gave his deepest condolences. I am so glad that I was put on a path to meet John. Without his care and help I don’t think I would have known what to do.”
