You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My mother passed unexpectedly at home in January 2026. After the formality of first responders arriving and assessing the situation, a funeral home had to be called. Both sides of my family have used Johnson Funeral Home for over 65 years with each generational passing. So, who was I going to utilize? Johnson Funeral Home, of course. They were contacted late that Wednesday night around 11:00 pm or maybe later. Chad Thomas, the funeral director, and an assistant were there at the house promptly. They were courteous and patient with me as I was unprepared for the people and event that was happening before me. After Momma was declared expired and responders were packing their gear, offering their condolences and leaving, Chad and his assistant began to prepare Momma for the trip to the funeral home. They were careful and respectful with handling her. Chad and I talked about a time to meet for funeral preps. We set 2:00pm as it was already Thursday. Upon arrival at the funeral home, I was greeted by staff members and ushered to a meeting room. Chad was courteous, patient and professional with the offerings that Johnson Funeral Home had for funerals, explaining the procedures and costs. He is truly an asset to Johnson as well as the others. We had Momma's graveside service on Friday afternoon as planned. The staff did a marvelous job setting the grave site up for service. Everyone complimented how nice the service was and how accommodating the funeral home staff is. This is why I kept the tradition of utilizing Johnson Funeral Home for Momma's funeral service. They were utilized before I was born and during my lifetime, and they will be utilized after I'm gone. Thank you, Chad, Jennifer, and all of the staff that was a part of my mother's body prep, funeral and burial. I know Carolyn B. Vick was in the best of care.”

“This was my first time going through a death of a love one. They give me time, they were very professional and very respectful towards us the family and my mom. I had time to process what I was facing, and they never rushed me. I saw their understanding, compassion and care. When it came to time frames for the different stages of preparing a funeral, they delivered on time. After the fact their concern was sincere and helpful as my family and myself are going through the changes”

“Johnson Funeral Home was so helpful at a time when I had no idea what to do next. They were kind and courteous and they made up the obituary with just information that was given . Everything was done so professionally and so smoothly. I wasn’t expecting such a beautiful story of my sister‘s life in the obituary. I really appreciated that. The pricing was much more affordable than the other locations and I was on a very tight budget. All I can say is thank you.”
