You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This was my first experience with a crematorium, and the death of a loved one naturally forces you to place immense trust in others for such a sensitive process as memorialization or cremation. I was initially resistant to entrusting anyone with this deeply personal matter for my brother. To ease my concerns, I requested to observe the cremation itself. Justin was incredibly patient throughout, even offering thoughtful recommendations for the best areas to stay and dine in town. On the day of the service, he was thorough, respectful, and attentive, guiding me step by step and explaining each part of the process with care. Though we paid extra for the observation, it was absolutely worth it—I now carry lifelong peace of mind from the experience. I highly recommend Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors for their compassionate cremation services.”

“If I could do a million stars I would. Our dog died on July 3rd. We were three hours from home and 1.5 hours from them. Being Fourth of July weekend, many places were closed. ( happened at like 3pm) They stayed open late for us. We couldn't get there until 6. The owners were so compassionate and understanding. The only thing he asked was that two of us come because he recently had surgery ( hip or knee I think?) so we could help transport our 60lb lab. We had our dogs ashes mailed to us and it arrived quickly. The cremation was surprisingly affordable (like 125 I think?) They made a devastating day a little better. They are truly angels.”

“We’ve used this funeral home for several pets over the years. Today was no exception to their compassionate and patient approach to difficult times like this. Today I took my beloved best furry friend, Sophie. It was hard to leave her on the table, but the man in the back said something that gave me great comfort “I’m sorry for your loss, I will take good care of her”. He was patient as I kissed her again as he folded her blankets and gave me space. I miss her so much, my best friend forever.”
