You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“When you've lost a loved one it's hard enough trying to get through the day. The phone calls explaining things over and over to the insurance companies and you're just wanting to get the service done. The staff of Lafayette Howe's are the very best at the whole experience. The two people who came to our house were so respectful of my husband and because he was a veteran covered him with a flag for his transport along with that Denise and Danielle in the office went above and beyond what I expected. Both made me feel welcome day after day having to come in to have something faxed to the insurance companies and Danielle even spoke to the agent to make sure they got everything they need. I really can't believe that Denise even volunteered to come in on a Sunday so I could have the service when they're usually closed. That's something that you wouldn't see often a person who is willing to give up free time just to help someone they just met. I've been to friends services over the past years usually at Howes so I can't find enough words to say what they all did for me. In today's society many young people seem to behave like working is punishment and they seem to just just want to get what they need to so they can get back to the game on their phone. Believe me it makes a difference when you're that customer who needs a bit more help so thank you all for being authentic and genuine with the care you give 😊 ❤️”

“It's taken me a long time to write this review but that is no reflection on this funeral home. After unexpectedly losing my husband, I was fortunate to work with Darrell Howe Mortuary for everything. The people there are welcoming, sympathetic and incredibly knowledgeable about everything. The price was very fair and I felt very good about the entire process. They handled the cremation, the service, the reception and 2 honor guards without any drama and with complete professionalism. They never overwhelmed me which was really appreciated. They listened to every request and suggested things I had never thought of. One example is I couldn't take many of the flower arrangements with me and they arranged for a service that picks up the extra, makes new bouquets and delivers them to nursing home residents. How incredible is that! I was very happy with Darrell Howe and recommend that you use them in your time of sorrow. They help smooth the process so you can grieve and not have to worry about all the details.”

“Recently we had a request from a friend to hold a traditional Tibetan funeral. This involved a home vigil and donation of the body to a specific site in Western Colorado. Dane, Katy, and the entire staff at Darrell Howe were above and beyond helpful with information and necessary resources at no charge even though they knew they would be getting no business from our needs. They truly see their role as community members with a commitment to taking care of their neighbors, whatever the need. Based on direct experience with these folks, I know they can be trusted with your loved ones and your needs at a vulnerable time. You can count on them to support your wishes and provide service of the utmost integrity.”
