You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“So heartbroken with the Kemper-Keim funeral chapel. My son, a decorated veteran from Troy passed away recently. We asked Kemper-Keim to facilitate his interment at Jefferson Barracks with honors and an escort to Jefferson Barracks with a procession by the Patriot guard. We arrived at the funeral home at the designated time…the doors were locked and there was no sign of the Patriot guard. We ended up traveling to Jefferson Barracks alone. To make things even worse, the previous day, at his celebration of life, flowers were delivered after the service was over. My son, a decorated war hero, deserved more respect. His daughter, his wife and myself, his mother, are devastated at the treatment we received…devastated at the treatment a decorated veteran of the United States Marine Corps received from the negligence and unpatriotic disrespect of this funeral home. Here is the reply we received from the Patriot guard: Thank you for reaching out. My most humble condolences for the loss of Mr. Marty Everett. I preformed an exhaustive search for the mission request for him via the last name then the name of the cemetery. We have 54 requests for Jefferson Barracks since March 2025, all fulfilled, but we do not have a request for Mr. Everett. My apologies are not enough but truly; we did not receive notification and were not invited per the national database. I am including the state captain for further assistance if possible. Respectfully, Dave Lusk PGR National”

“A very dignified business for when you bite the big one and take the forever pause. They really handle their affairs”

“Most insensitive, unprofessional, unbelievable experience of my life! First off, I ordered a plain casket on Friday and had 7 days until the funeral. 2 days later we changed to cremation. They already embalmed him so I got charged for that instantly. Then, when I told her to cancel the casket because it didn't even ship yet, she told me no. She giggled and told me to USE IT FOR A COFFEE TABLE OR HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS!!!!! The casket my father was suppose to be buried in! For 4 days I messaged her to check for an earring he wore for 25years, its missing! She wouldn't give me the number for the crematory or call them. She rudely told me to call the corner which he said he forgot to check... My dad was in this building for 4 days before he was cremated and they never checked for this special earring. The funeral director's name is Jamie Keim”
