You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“0 Stars PLEASE READ- I have never seen such INEPTITUDE from a company whose sole mission is to provide compassionate, sensitive, comforting services to grieving families in their time of greatest need and vulnerability. Jones staff actually added an immense level of stress and tension to our loss. Our experience with Jones Mortuary was NOTHING short of a nightmare. From the start, the staff was disorganized, mixing up names and failing to communicate important details. Despite paying in full and providing all necessary forms, we faced constant issues retrieving my father’s belongings, including his ashes, urn, and personal items. On the day that the mortuary was set to pick up my father's body from the Coroners, Jones called us, rushing us to fill out the form so that the coroner's office would release his belongings (earphones) to them. We swiftly filled out the form and emailed it back, ONLY FOR THE CORONERS' OFFICE TO TELL US THAT THEY NEVER RECIEVED ANY FORM AND THAT HIS BELONGINGS WERE STILL THERE, after we had received the clothes he had been wearing the day of his death, which the Admin team ALSO failed to communicate. How do you sleep at night knowing that you are making it tougher for the family to grieve because of your negligence? On the day of the funeral, staff were unprepared, underdressed, and repeatedly asked us questions about the service that we had already answered, adding unnecessary stress during an already emotional time. When we arrived for the viewing, the 3 main men who were supposed to lead the service were all wearing casual wear and I mean hoodie/t-shirt and jeans. Not only were they not dressed appropriately, but they also pulled myself and my stepmom into a room as people were coming in, to ask us about things we had already talked about during the consultation, ALL WHILE CHANGING INTO THEIR SERVICE WEAR. Even going back to the mortuary to finally receive my father’s belongings he wore during the funeral, which was a month later, the mortuary questioned MY YELP review, IN PERSON, and STATED THEY NEVER EVEN ORDERED THE URN THAT WE PURCHASED 72 HOURS BEFORE THE FUNERAL. For obvious reasons, we do not recommend Jones Mortuary. It's one thing to occasionally deliver poor service, but based on our experience and others, it appears this level of incompetence is their norm which, if true, is obscene. They appear totally oblivious to the impact their conduct has on an already grieving family. How they have remained in business delivering such a service is perplexing beyond our comprehension. Spare yourself some guaranteed anguish, frustration and embarrassment and take your funeral business elsewhere, especially for your loved one. Their lack of empathy, professionalism, and attention to detail caused immense frustration and pain. Families entrust mortuaries with their most personal moments—Jones Mortuary fails to meet even basic expectations. Avoid them if you want a compassionate, organized service. HERES MY UPDATE - NEGATIVE 0 stars if I could. Not only to question and try to make my father's wife FEEL BAD bout MY review of their ragged company. They never ordered the special urn that's displayed in the office which we purchased. It was never ordered and it's sad that the mortuary initially thought that we had received the urn when it was never ordered. Clearly showing their lack of organization and awareness. ALSO, PLEASE CHECK THEIR YELP REVIEWS FOR A MORE ACCURATE VIEW OF THE COMPANY JONES MORTUARY, if you guys continue to do business with grieving families, actually do the job WITH EMPATHY or give it to someone who will actually work with the family to make their experience smooth. AND DON'T EVER QUESTION A PAYING CUSTOMER'S REVIEW, ITS OUR EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WILL NEVER UNDERTSTAND UNTIL ITS YOU GOING THROUGH IT! ITS ALREADY ENOUGH THAT WE HAVE TO BURY OUR LOVED ONES.”

“The best Mortuary in the Palo Alto. Super friendly staff. Reasonable Prices. It was big enough to our needs for my older brother's funeral. Had no problem with anything. Highly Recommend.”

“I will be forever grateful to Jones Mortuary. In 2003, when we lived in Palo Alto, I lost a baby while being five months pregnant. It was something internal with the cord, so the baby could not be saved. Of course we were heartbroken, as this was supposed to be our second child. I went into the hospital at Kaiser Redwood City and the social worker there helped me find Jones Mortuary who made it a policy to give free burial for infants, including stillborns like ours. Naturally we were crushed at losing baby Jonathan, but between Kaiser Redwood City, our wonderful social worker, and the very caring and compassionate people at Jones Mortuary we were able to have a beautiful burial at a Palo Alto cemetery. Our baby was only 22 weeks along. Jones mortuary never charged me a penny. They were kind, considerate, sensitive, and very understanding. They made everything so easy. I don’t know if they are still there because of all the big box stores opening up nearby, but I will be forever grateful and if I never have a chance to visit them again to say hello or thank you, I hope this post will let everyone know how decent and kind they are. I would recommend anyone to them. Blessings to all who read this, and to the good people at Jones.”
